Bariatric Surgery

• Obesity; It is a disease that is increasingly seen all over the world, described as the "disease of the age" and can cause life-threatening problems.

• Gastric sleeve and other weight-loss surgeries — known collectively as bariatric surgery — involve making changes to your digestive system to help you lose weight.

• Bariatric surgery is done when diet and exercise haven't worked or when you have serious health problems because of your weight.

• Some procedures limit how much you can eat. Other procedures work by reducing the body's ability to absorb nutrients. Some procedures do both.

• While bariatric surgery can offer many benefits, all forms of weight-loss surgery are major procedures that can pose serious risks and side effects. Also, you must make permanent healthy changes to your diet and get regular exercise to help ensure the long-term success of bariatric surgery.

Types of Bariatric Surgery

Gastric Sleeve

• Gastric Sleeve Surgery, or vertical sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), reduces the size of the stomach by removing about 80% of its capacity. Patients experience rapid weight loss results and have more control to live healthier and maintain a slimmer body.

• Restriction in stomach capacity: Limits food intake and feel full from smaller sized portions.

• Reduction of hunger hormones: Significantly reduces Ghrelin in the stomach so you feel less hungry.

• Improves satiety hormones: Increased sensitivity to Leptin (protein) responsible for feeling full.

Gastric Bypass

• Gastric bypass is a fast, powerful, and long-term solution to fighting obesity by changing the body’s metabolic thermostat. Patients can lose about 78% of their excess body weight in 1.5 years after surgery.

• Restriction in new stomach pouch: It limits food intake and gives a feeling of satiety in smaller portions.

• Malabsorption in calories absorbed: It provides an effective solution in the treatment of obesity by providing less absorption of calories from food.

Gastric Balloon

In the Gastric Balloon procedure, a balloon is inflated in the stomach to temporarily decrease the stomach capacity/volume and induce weight loss. The goal of this procedure is to be somewhere in between major weight loss surgery and dieting/exercise. The gastric balloon works best with a structured program and lifestyle changes.

Differences Between Sleeve and Bypass

Gastric Sleeve

• Stomach size is reduced

• Suitable for patients over BMI 30+

• Low risk of complications

• Short recovery time

• Short-term medication use

• Vitamin mineral absorption continues

• Less Ghrelin release

• It is beneficial for the sugar level of diabetic patients

Gastric Bypass

• Stomach is bypassed and connected with the small intestine

• Suitable for patients over BMI 50+

• High risk of complications

• Long recovery time

• Lifetime vitamin and mineral requirement

• Very small amounts of vitamins and minerals are taken from meals

• Ghrelin release continues

• More beneficial for reflux and diabetes patients

• Dumping syndrome risk

Who Are The Best Candidates?

• Obesity according to body mass index (BMI)

• Type 2 diabetes,

• Obstructive sleep apnea,

• High Blood Pressure,

• Arthritis

• If you have other obesity-related conditions (high cholesterol, vascular stenosis, varicose veins, etc.) you may be a candidate for obesity surgery
